Blue Corner, Red Corner

carbon paper drawing on the wall
100 x 90 cm
2011

Blue Corner, Red Corner was started from a small drawing created in 2002 when Chung participated in the 4th Gwangju Biennale. The drawing is about a built structure that captivated the artist’s sight during her field trip to an area that was once a military base in Gwangju, which was old and empty at the time of her visit. What captivated the artist’s attention was a platform made of cement that was similar to a boxing ring or a wrestling ring in its shape and size, with two handrails installed at its two corners. From such a sculptural space, Chung conceived an idea of an old and simple confrontation, which has led to a creation of a number of a number of drawing in which she dealt with the subject of “the blue corner and the red corner.
